------------------------

Kokeshi dolls are simple wooden dolls which are made from a cylindrical piece with painted face and no distinct arms or legs.

They have been made for more than 150 years as toys for children. Originating from the north eastern region of Japan, in the mountainous parts of Tohoku. They were made by the craftsmen (the Kijishi) who were familiar with wood turning making bowls and trays. It is thought they were made for the visitors to the hot springs.

The dolls are painted with simple designs and the ink is covered with a layer of wax.

The designs are now grouped into eleven types. Of all of these, the Tsugaru kokeshi doll has the shortest history, with the patterns based on Nebuta painting and it’s colourful hues.

Cohana’s Kokeshi doll, is from the Tsugaru kokeshi doll style. With it’s innocent simple face and bobbed hair it contains three needles from Meboso Hachirobei Shoten (home of quality needle makers in Japan). There is a magnet on the bottom of the doll so that the needles can be picked up.

It’s small enough to be tucked into your craft and sewing case to carry with you or have it displayed at home.
